What does splitting a PDF do?

Splitting takes a set of pages you choose and copies them into a new PDF. Use it to pull a few pages out of a large document, or to cut a big file down to the part you need. It does not change the pages themselves, so the text, images, and layout in the result match the original.

How to split a PDF

    Upload your PDF

Click or drag your file into the box.

Save the new PDF, ready to share, print, or store.

Your file is processed on your own device and is never uploaded to a server.

Understanding the page range (1-3, 5, 7-9)

The page range tells the tool exactly which pages to keep.

  • A dash means a run of pages. 1-3 keeps pages 1, 2, and 3.
  • A single number keeps just that page. 5 keeps page 5 on its own.
  • Commas separate the parts. So 1-3, 5, 7-9 keeps pages 1 to 3, then 5, then 7 to 9.

Pages are counted as they appear in the document, starting at 1. Any page you do not list is left out of the new file.

Does splitting reduce quality?

No. Splitting is lossless. It copies your original pages into a new file without re-compressing them, so the pages you extract look exactly like they did in the original, at full quality. Nothing is re-rendered or reduced.

Splitting on Windows, Mac, or your phone

The tool runs in any modern browser, so it works the same on Windows, Mac, Linux, ChromeOS, iPhone, and Android. There is nothing to install and no software to buy. Upload your PDF, choose your pages, and download, whether you are on a laptop or a phone.

Is it free, and is my file safe?

The tool is free. No trial, no card, no watermark, and no daily limit.

Because the split happens on your own device, your PDF is never uploaded to a server. That is useful when you are working with private or confidential documents.

Common uses

  • Pulling a single signed page out of a scanned packet
  • Separating one chapter from a combined document
  • Extracting an exhibit or an appendix from a larger file
  • Cutting a long report down to the section you need to send

Frequently asked questions

Is this Split PDF tool free?

Yes. Splitting is free, with no signup, no watermark, and no daily limit.

Will splitting reduce the quality of my PDF?

No. Splitting copies your original pages into a new file without re-compressing them, so the extracted pages keep their original quality exactly.

How do I choose which pages to keep?

Type a page range in the box. Use a dash for a run of pages (1-3), a single number for one page (5), and commas to combine them (1-3, 5, 7-9). Pages are numbered from 1.

Can I split a PDF into separate individual files?

This tool extracts a page range into one new PDF. To save pages as separate files, split them one range at a time, for example 1 for the first file, then 2 for the next.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The split runs entirely in your browser, so your PDF stays on your device and is never sent to a server.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Not while it is locked. A password-protected PDF cannot be read, so remove the password first by opening it and saving an unprotected copy, then split that copy.

Can I split PDFs without installing software?

Yes. Everything happens in your browser, so there is nothing to download on your computer or phone.

What is the difference between splitting and merging?

Splitting breaks one PDF into a smaller file or into separate pages. Merging does the opposite, combining several PDFs into one. If you want to join files instead, use our Merge PDF tool.

Does it work on Mac and Windows?

Yes. It runs in any browser, so it works on Mac, Windows, Linux, and mobile without any install.
