What is an MD5 hash used for?
An MD5 hash reduces any input to a fixed 32-character hexadecimal fingerprint, used to verify that a file downloaded intact. MD5 is broken for security purposes - collisions can be produced deliberately - so it must not be used for passwords, signatures, or anything requiring tamper resistance.
