Create a Barcode Online
This free barcode generator draws Code 128, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, Code 39 and ITF-14 barcodes and lets you download them as a PNG image or an SVG vector file. Pick the type, type the value, and the barcode redraws as you go, ready for a label, a price tag, a spreadsheet or a shipping carton.
Everything happens in your browser, so the numbers and text you enter are never uploaded. For retail codes the tool works out the check digit for you and refuses a wrong one, so you do not print a barcode that will not scan.
How to Use the Barcode Generator
- 1
Pick the barcode type
Choose Code 128 for any text, EAN-13 or UPC-A for retail products, EAN-8 for small packs, Code 39 for labels and badges, or ITF-14 for shipping cartons.
- 2
Enter the value
Type the number or text. For EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ITF-14 you can leave off the last check digit and it is worked out for you.
- 3
Adjust the size
Set the bar width from 1 to 4 and the height from 30 to 150 pixels, and choose whether the value is printed under the bars.
- 4
Download
Click Download PNG for a sharp image at three times the preview size, or Download SVG for a vector file that scales to any print size.
Which Barcode Type to Use
| Type | What it holds | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Code 128 | Any text: letters, digits and symbols | Internal labels, asset tags, order and tracking numbers |
| EAN-13 | 12 digits plus a check digit | Retail products sold outside North America |
| UPC-A | 11 digits plus a check digit | Retail products in the US and Canada |
| EAN-8 | 7 digits plus a check digit | Small packs with no room for EAN-13 |
| Code 39 | A-Z, 0-9 and - . $ / + % space | ID badges, older warehouse and industrial systems |
| ITF-14 | 13 digits plus a check digit | Outer shipping cartons (GTIN-14) |
EAN-13 and UPC-A numbers on products in shops are GS1 product numbers (GTINs). You license them from GS1 or get them from your supplier; this tool draws the barcode for a number you already have. For your own stock, shelves or equipment, Code 128 with any internal code is the simplest choice.
Printing Barcodes That Scan
- Prefer SVG for print. A vector file keeps every bar edge sharp at any size; PNG is fine for documents and screens.
- Do not squeeze it. Scale a barcode evenly. Stretching or squashing changes the bar widths and can make it unreadable.
- Keep the quiet zone. Leave the white space on the left and right of the bars; cropping it is the most common reason scans fail.
- Black on white. Scanners read dark bars on a light background. Avoid red bars, which many laser scanners cannot see.
- Test it. Scan the printed label with a phone barcode app or your handheld scanner before printing a full batch.
To put several labels on one page, place the PNGs in a document and save it with the image to PDF converter. For links and longer text, a QR code holds far more in less space. More utilities are in the developer tools section.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. There is no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many barcodes you make or download.
Only with a real product number. Shops read EAN-13 and UPC-A codes as GS1 product numbers (GTINs), which you license from GS1 or receive from your supplier. This tool draws the barcode for a number you already have; it does not issue numbers, and a made-up number will not be accepted by retailers.
The last digit of an EAN, UPC or ITF-14 code is calculated from the others so scanners can catch misreads. You can leave it off and the tool adds it. If you type the full number and the last digit is wrong, the tool tells you the value is not valid instead of drawing a barcode that will not scan.
Use Code 128 for anything internal, such as stock labels or asset tags, because it holds any text compactly. Use EAN-13 or UPC-A only for product numbers you own, EAN-8 for very small packs, Code 39 when an older system asks for it, and ITF-14 for shipping cartons.
SVG is a vector file, so it stays perfectly sharp at any size and is the better choice for print layouts and label software. PNG is an image, drawn here at three times the preview size, which is handy for documents, spreadsheets and web pages.
No. The barcode is drawn in your browser with the JsBarcode library, so the values you type never leave your device.
No, this tool makes one-dimensional (linear) barcodes only. For a QR code, use the QR code generator.
The usual causes are printing it too small or too narrow, cropping the white margin on either side, low contrast, or a printer that blurs thin bars. Use a bar width of 2 or more for print, keep the quiet zone, and print black on white.

How do you make a barcode online?
To make a barcode, pick the type - Code 128 for any text, EAN-13 or UPC-A for retail product numbers, EAN-8, Code 39 or ITF-14 - type the value, then download it as a PNG or SVG. The check digit is added for EAN, UPC and ITF codes, and everything is drawn in your browser.
Can I make my own EAN or UPC barcode for products?
You can draw one for any valid number, but shops only accept EAN-13 and UPC-A numbers that are registered GS1 product numbers (GTINs), which you license from GS1 or get from your supplier. For internal stock, shelf or asset labels, use Code 128 with any code you choose; no registration is needed.
