Why use Markdown Table Generator?

Markdown tables are simple to read and tedious to write by hand. Every row needs the right number of pipes, the header needs a divider line beneath it with a dash run for each column, and getting the pipes to line up in the source means counting characters. This generator takes the shortcut most people actually want: paste rows the way you would type them, one line each with commas between values, and let the formatting be worked out for you. Column widths are measured across every row, including the header, so each column is padded to its widest entry with a floor of three characters, which is the minimum a divider needs. The one real limitation is worth knowing before you paste. Splitting happens on every comma, with no support for quoted fields, so a cell containing a comma will split into two. For a quick documentation table that is rarely a problem, and for anything with embedded commas a proper CSV tool is the better starting point.

Frequently asked questions

Does it handle commas inside a cell?

No. The parser splits each line on every comma, so a value that itself contains a comma will be broken into two columns. Quoted CSV fields are not supported. If your data has commas inside values, replace them before pasting or fix the affected row afterwards.

What if a row has fewer values than the header?

Missing trailing cells are filled with blanks so the row still has the same number of columns as the header. A table with a ragged row would not render correctly in Markdown, so it is padded instead.

Why is the raw output padded with extra spaces?

Markdown ignores the extra spaces when rendering, but padding makes the source readable and diff friendly. Reviewing a table in a pull request is far easier when the pipes line up.

Can I set column alignment?

Not from this tool. The divider row is generated with plain dashes, which renders as left aligned. To centre or right align a column, add a colon to that divider cell by hand after copying, for example :---: or ---:.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. Parsing and formatting happen in the page as you type, and the text is never sent to a server.
