Make a Photo Collage Online
The Tools Kit’s free Collage Maker combines 2, 3, or 4 photos into a single grid image. Put two pictures side by side, stack one above the other, line up three in a row, or build a classic 2x2 photo grid, then download the result as a PNG. There is no signup and no watermark, and because the collage is drawn on a canvas in your browser, your photos never leave your device.
Every photo is placed in a 500 x 500 pixel square and center-cropped to fill it, so portrait and landscape shots line up in a clean, even grid without being stretched. A spacing slider adds a white gap of 0 to 30 pixels between the photos and around the edge.
How to Use the Collage Maker
- 1
Choose a layout
Pick 2 photos side by side, 2 stacked, 3 in a row, or a 2x2 grid of 4. The layout sets how many photos the collage holds.
- 2
Add your photos
Click the upload area or drag images onto it. Photos fill the slots in the order you add them, left to right and then top to bottom; any beyond the layout’s slot count are ignored.
- 3
Set the spacing
Drag the spacing slider anywhere from 0 to 30 pixels to control the white gap between photos and around the edge.
- 4
Generate and download
Click Generate Collage to preview the result, then click Download to save it as collage.png.
Changing the layout clears the previous preview, and a new spacing value is applied the next time you click Generate Collage, so regenerate after any change. Click Clear to remove all photos and start over.
Collage Layouts: Side by Side, Stacked, Row, and Grid
- 2 (Side by Side) — two photos next to each other, ideal for a before-and-after comparison.
- 2 (Stacked) — one photo above the other, producing a tall image that suits phone screens and stories.
- 3 (Row) — three photos in a single wide strip, good for a sequence or a panorama-style banner.
- 4 (Grid) — the default 2x2 photo grid, the most common choice for a square social media post.
Photos fill the slots in the order you add them: left to right, then top to bottom. If you add fewer photos than the layout holds, the empty slots stay white. If you need more than four images in one file, the Image to PDF converter puts any number of pictures into a multi-page document, and the GIF Maker turns a set of photos into an animated slideshow instead of a still grid.
How Photos Are Cropped to Fit the Grid
Each cell is a square, but most photos are not. The collage maker scales every photo just enough that its shorter side covers the 500-pixel square, then trims the longer side equally from both ends. For example, a 4000 x 3000 landscape photo is scaled to cover the square, and the centered 3000 x 3000 portion is kept, so 500 pixels of the original are cut from the left and 500 from the right. A portrait photo loses the same proportion from its top and bottom.
This “cover” method means no photo is ever squashed or stretched and no cell is left with empty bars. The trade-off is that subjects near the edge of a photo can be cut off. If the important part of a picture is off-center, trim it to a square first with the Image Cropper, and straighten sideways shots with the Image Rotator before adding them. Very small photos are scaled up to 500 pixels, so use originals rather than thumbnails for a sharp result.
Collage Size, Spacing, and File Format
The finished image size follows directly from the layout and the spacing. Width = 500 × columns + spacing × (columns + 1), and height = 500 × rows + spacing × (rows + 1), because the spacing is drawn between cells and around the outer edge.
- 2x2 grid, 8 px spacing (default): 1024 x 1024 pixels
- 2x2 grid, 0 px spacing: 1000 x 1000 pixels, with photos touching edge to edge
- 2 side by side, 8 px spacing: 1024 x 516 pixels
- 2 stacked, 8 px spacing: 516 x 1024 pixels
- 3 in a row, 30 px spacing: 1620 x 560 pixels
The collage always downloads as a lossless PNG named collage.png. PNG keeps every pixel intact but can produce a large file from photographs, so if a site or email limits upload size, convert it with PNG to JPG or shrink it with the Image Compressor.
Common uses
- Putting two photos side by side for a before-and-after comparison
- Making a 2x2 photo grid for an Instagram or Facebook post
- Combining vacation, wedding, or birthday photos into one shareable picture
- Showing a product from three angles in a single row image
- Stacking two photos into one tall image for a phone wallpaper or a story
The collage has no built-in text, so to caption it or add a date, open the downloaded PNG in Add Text to Image. More free editors and converters are collected on the image tools page.
Collage maker terms explained
| Term | What it means here |
|---|---|
| Layout | The grid arrangement: 2 side by side, 2 stacked, 3 in a row, or a 2x2 grid of 4 |
| Cell / slot | One square in the grid; each is drawn at 500 x 500 pixels |
| Center crop | Scaling a photo until it covers the square, then trimming the overflow equally from both sides so the middle of the photo stays in view |
| Aspect ratio | Width divided by height; a 4000 x 3000 photo is 4:3, so it loses its left and right edges when cropped to a square |
| Spacing / gutter | The white gap, 0 to 30 pixels, drawn between cells and around the outer edge |
| PNG | A lossless image format; the collage always downloads as a PNG named collage.png |
Frequently Asked Questions
Choose a layout, add up to 4 photos, set the spacing from 0 to 30 pixels, and click Generate Collage. Click Download to save the finished collage as a PNG. There is no signup, no watermark, and nothing is uploaded.
Up to four. The 2x2 grid holds 4 photos, the row layout holds 3, and the side-by-side and stacked layouts hold 2 each. Photos added beyond the selected layout’s slots are ignored, so pick the layout first.
Select the "2 (Side by Side)" layout, add your two photos, and generate the collage. The first photo goes on the left and the second on the right. Use "2 (Stacked)" instead to place one photo above the other.
Yes, unless they are already square. Every cell is a 500 x 500 pixel square, so each photo is scaled to cover the square and then center-cropped. A landscape photo loses some of its left and right edges, and a portrait photo loses some of its top and bottom. Nothing is stretched or distorted.
It depends on the layout and spacing. Width is 500 pixels per column plus the spacing once more than the number of columns, and height works the same way for rows. A 2x2 grid at the default 8 px spacing is 1024 x 1024 pixels; three in a row at 8 px is 1532 x 516 pixels.
Photos are placed in the order you add them, left to right and then top to bottom. There is no drag-to-reorder, so to change the order click Clear and add the photos again in the sequence you want.
No. The spacing between and around the photos is always white. Set the spacing to 0 for a borderless collage where the photos touch edge to edge.
The collage is still generated, and any empty slots are left as white squares. For example, two photos in the 2x2 grid fill the top row and leave the bottom row blank.
The collage always downloads as a PNG file named collage.png. PNG is lossless, so the file can be large; convert it to JPG or compress it if you need a smaller file for email or upload.
No. The photos are loaded and drawn onto a canvas entirely in your browser, and the PNG is created on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
Only if your browser can open HEIC images, which most desktop browsers other than Safari cannot. If a HEIC photo is not counted in the photo total, or the collage does not generate after you add one, click Clear, convert the photo to JPG, and add the JPG instead.
iPhone photos saved as HEIC can be converted first with HEIC to JPG if your browser cannot open them.

How do you make a photo collage online?
To make a photo collage, choose a layout (two side by side, two stacked, three in a row, or a two-by-two grid of four), add that many photos, and set the spacing between them from 0 to 30 pixels. Each photo is centre-cropped to fill a 500-pixel square cell on a white background, and the collage downloads as a PNG.
How many photos can you put in a collage?
Up to four photos in one collage. The two-by-two grid holds four, the row layout holds three, and the side-by-side and stacked layouts hold two each. Any photos added beyond the selected layout's slots are ignored, so pick the layout first, then add exactly that many images.
