Convert Height From cm to Feet and Inches

The Tools Kit's free Height Converter turns a height in centimeters into feet and inches, or feet and inches into centimeters, in one step. It is the quick answer to questions like “how tall is 170 cm in feet?” or “what is 5′7″ in cm?”, and alongside the main result it shows the height in total inches and in meters.

Every conversion uses the exact international inch, 1 inch = 2.54 cm, so 170 cm comes out as 5 feet 6.9 inches and 5 feet 7 inches comes out as 170.2 cm. For other lengths, such as miles, yards, or meters, use the general unit converter, or browse every tool in Conversion Tools.

How to Convert Height Between Feet and Centimeters

One inch is exactly 2.54 cm, and one foot is exactly 30.48 cm. These are defined values, not approximations. To convert feet and inches to centimeters, multiply the feet by 30.48, multiply the inches by 2.54, and add the two: 5 feet 7 inches is 152.4 + 17.78 = 170.18 cm, which the converter rounds to 170.2 cm.

Going the other way, divide the centimeters by 2.54 to get total inches, then divide by 12 for the feet and keep the remainder as inches. 180 cm is 70.87 total inches, which is 5 feet 10.9 inches.

The converter shows inches to one decimal place. When the remainder rounds up to a full 12 inches, it carries into the next foot, so 182.8 cm reads as 6 feet 0 inches rather than an awkward 5 feet 12 inches.

Height in cm, Meters, and Feet Around the World

The United States states height in feet and inches, the UK commonly does too in everyday speech, and most other countries use centimeters or meters. That mismatch is why the same person can be “5′9″” on one form and “175 cm” on another: 175 cm is actually 5 feet 8.9 inches, so the two are close but not identical.

Health and fitness tools tend to want one specific unit. The calorie calculator asks for height in centimeters, so convert from feet and inches here first, while the BMI calculator accepts either centimeters or feet and inches. If you are comparing two heights, the percentage calculator shows how much taller one is than the other in percent.

Common uses

  • Filling in a medical, visa, or ID form that asks for height in a unit you do not normally use
  • Entering height into fitness apps, sports profiles, or dating profiles in the expected format
  • Reading a height quoted in cm in a news article, player roster, or clothing size chart
  • Checking a child's growth measurement taken in one unit against a chart in the other
  • Preparing travel paperwork; for the photo itself, the passport photo maker crops and resizes to standard passport photo sizes

Working with digital sizes rather than physical ones? The data storage converter handles bytes, megabytes, and gigabytes in the same quick way.
