1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes
Decimal (1000-based)
Drive and storage labels, macOS
Binary (1024-based)
Windows sizes (shown as KB, MB, GB) and RAM
Convert Bytes, KB, MB, GB and TB
The Tools Kit's free Data Storage Converter turns a file size or disk capacity into every common storage unit at once. Enter a number, pick its unit, and you see the same amount in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes, so questions like “how many MB in a GB” or “how many bytes in a terabyte” are answered in one step.
Results appear in decimal units (1 KB = 1,000 bytes), as used on drive packaging and in cloud quotas, and in binary units (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes), as used for RAM and by software that counts in powers of two, side by side. Everything is calculated in your browser.
How to Use the Data Storage Converter
- 1
Enter the value
Type the amount into the Value field. Decimals such as 1.5 are fine, and a blank field simply shows no results.
- 2
Pick the unit it is in
Select the unit your number is in: decimal units (KB, MB, GB, TB) as drive makers use them, or binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) as Windows and RAM use them.
- 3
Read both systems at once
The byte total appears first, then the amount in every decimal unit and every binary unit side by side, so 1 GB shows as both 1,000 MB and 953.67 MiB.
- 4
Copy a result
Click Copy next to any result to copy the plain number, without commas, ready to paste elsewhere.
Because both systems are shown together, you can enter a value in one system and read it in the other: choose MiB as the unit to see what a Windows file size is in decimal MB, or GB to see a drive's capacity in GiB.
Decimal vs Binary: KB or KiB, GB or GiB?
The SI prefixes kilo, mega, giga and tera mean powers of 1,000, so a decimal gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Computers address memory in powers of two, and for decades 1,024 bytes was also called a kilobyte. To end the ambiguity, the IEC defined binary prefixes: kibi (KiB), mebi (MiB), gibi (GiB) and tebi (TiB), each 1,024 times the one before.
- Decimal: bytes = value × 1,000n, where n is 1 for KB, 2 for MB, 3 for GB and 4 for TB.
- Binary: bytes = value × 1,024n, where n is 1 for KiB, 2 for MiB, 3 for GiB and 4 for TiB.
The converter first turns your entry into a byte total, then divides that total by each unit's factor. Every result comes straight from the bytes rather than from the previous unit, so rounding never compounds. The difference between the systems is small at the kilo level (2.4%) but reaches about 10% at the tera level, which is where most confusion starts. If you work with powers of two often, the binary converter shows how numbers like 1,024 look in binary and hexadecimal.
Why a 1 TB Drive Shows 931 GB
A drive sold as 1 TB holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows divides that by 1,024 three times and shows about 931 “GB”, which is really 931.32 GiB. The same effect makes a 500 GB drive appear as roughly 465.66 GiB and a 64 GB phone or memory card as about 59.6 GiB, before any space is taken by the system or formatting.
To check this yourself, enter 1 and choose TB: the binary column shows 931.322575 GiB. The same works for any GB figure to GiB, or MB to MiB.
MB to GB Conversion Table
To convert MB to GB, divide by 1,000. If the megabytes come from Windows or RAM, they are really mebibytes, and Windows divides by 1,024 to show gigabytes, so both answers are listed:
| Megabytes | Decimal: MB ÷ 1,000 = GB | Binary: MiB ÷ 1,024 = GiB (Windows “GB”) |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 0.1 | 0.098 |
| 250 | 0.25 | 0.244 |
| 256 | 0.256 | 0.25 |
| 500 | 0.5 | 0.488 |
| 512 | 0.512 | 0.5 |
| 750 | 0.75 | 0.732 |
| 1,000 | 1 | 0.977 |
| 1,024 | 1.024 | 1 |
| 1,500 | 1.5 | 1.465 |
| 2,048 | 2.048 | 2 |
| 4,096 | 4.096 | 4 |
| 5,000 | 5 | 4.883 |
| 8,192 | 8.192 | 8 |
| 10,000 | 10 | 9.766 |
| 16,384 | 16.384 | 16 |
| 32,768 | 32.768 | 32 |
Going the other way, multiply: 1 GB is 1,000 MB, and 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB. Values are rounded to three decimal places.
File Sizes, Upload Limits and Bits vs Bytes
Upload forms and email services often cap attachments at a size like 10 MB or 25 MB. Convert your file size into the same unit to see whether it fits. If it does not, an image compressor can shrink photos toward a target size in KB, and you can compress a PDF before attaching it. Converting images with JPG to WebP often saves space too. Embedding a file as text has the opposite effect: Base64 encoding makes data about one third larger, because every 3 bytes become 4 characters.
Internet speeds are quoted in bits per second, not bytes. There are 8 bits in a byte, so a 100 Mbps connection moves at most 12.5 MB of data per second. This converter works in bytes only, so divide a bit figure by 8 before entering it.
Common uses
- Checking whether a file fits an upload, attachment or messaging size limit
- Comparing an advertised drive, SSD or memory card capacity with what your computer reports
- Converting MB to GB for mobile data plans and cloud storage quotas
- Sizing backups, database dumps, video projects and photo libraries
- Reading RAM and cache sizes quoted in KiB, MiB or GiB

Storage units at a glance
| Unit | What it means |
|---|---|
| Byte (B) | The basic unit of storage, made of 8 bits; every result in the converter is calculated from a byte total |
| Bit (b) | A single 0 or 1. Network speeds are quoted in bits per second, so divide by 8 to get bytes; the converter itself works in bytes only |
| Kilobyte (KB) | 1,000 bytes in the decimal (SI) system |
| Kibibyte (KiB) | 1,024 bytes in the binary (IEC) system |
| Megabyte (MB) / Mebibyte (MiB) | 1,000,000 bytes / 1,048,576 bytes |
| Gigabyte (GB) / Gibibyte (GiB) | 1,000,000,000 bytes / 1,073,741,824 bytes |
| Terabyte (TB) / Tebibyte (TiB) | 1,000,000,000,000 bytes / 1,099,511,627,776 bytes |
Frequently Asked Questions
In the decimal system, 1 GB is 1,000 MB (1,000,000,000 bytes). In the binary system, 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB (1,073,741,824 bytes). Some software, including Windows File Explorer, shows binary values but labels them GB and MB, which is why both answers are common.
Under the SI standard a kilobyte (KB) is exactly 1,000 bytes, and 1,024 bytes is a kibibyte (KiB). Older software and RAM specifications often use KB to mean 1,024 bytes, so check which convention a number comes from. The converter shows both side by side: KB for 1,000 and KiB for 1,024.
The manufacturer sells 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Dividing that by 1,024 three times gives about 931.32 GiB, and Windows displays that figure with the label GB. No space is missing; the two numbers count the same bytes in different bases.
A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000,000,000 bytes and a gibibyte (GiB) is 1,073,741,824 bytes, so a GiB is about 7.4% larger. The gap grows with each prefix: about 2.4% at the kilo level and about 10% at the tera level.
Enter the value and choose GB as the unit. The binary column shows the same amount in KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB straight away. For example, 500 GB is 500,000,000,000 bytes, which is about 465.66 GiB.
A decimal gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes. A binary gibibyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes (1,024 x 1,024 x 1,024).
No. It covers bytes through terabytes and tebibytes. To convert bits, divide by 8 to get bytes first; for petabytes, enter the value as terabytes multiplied by 1,000 (or tebibytes multiplied by 1,024 for PiB).
Results are rounded to at most six decimal places. Anything smaller than 0.0000005 of a unit rounds to 0, so 1 byte expressed in terabytes reads 0. Switch your attention to a smaller unit, such as KB or MB, to see the value.
Use decimal for drive and memory card capacities on the box, cloud and data plan quotas, and network transfers. Use binary for RAM and for file sizes in software that counts in powers of 1,024, such as Windows File Explorer. macOS has reported file and disk sizes in decimal units since Mac OS X 10.6.
No. The conversion is plain arithmetic done in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to a server or stored.

How do you convert between bytes, KB, MB, GB, and TB?
To convert data storage units, enter a value, pick its unit, and every other unit is shown at once. Decimal units use 1,000 per step, so 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes; binary units use 1,024 per step, so 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. The difference is why a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GiB in Windows.
How many MB are in a GB?
In decimal units, used by drive manufacturers and the SI standard, 1 GB is 1,000 MB. In binary units, used for RAM and by Windows File Explorer, 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB, which is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Windows labels binary units as GB and MB, so 1 GB there means 1,024 MB, while macOS reports sizes in decimal units.
