These use real Unicode characters (not fonts), so they paste as styled text almost anywhere - Instagram bios, Discord, Twitter/X. Support varies slightly by app; test before relying on it somewhere important.
How do you type italic letters where italics are not supported?
Replace each letter with its Mathematical Italic equivalent, such as 𝐴 (U+1D434) for A and 𝑎 (U+1D44E) for a. The slant is part of each character, so it survives being pasted into bios, comments and usernames. The math block has no italic digits, so numbers stay upright, and the italic small h is the separate character ℎ (U+210E).
Italic example: a reading update
A reading-progress line, the kind of aside italics suit well, converted with the italic style:
| Typed | Now reading Dune, page 112 of 412 |
|---|---|
| Italic | 𝑁𝑜𝑤 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐷𝑢𝑛𝑒, 𝑝𝑎𝑔𝑒 112 𝑜𝑓 412 |
Every letter slants, but 112 and 412 stay upright because the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block simply has no italic digits. The comma passes through as an ordinary character too.
The italic alphabet and its one missing letter
Italic capitals occupy U+1D434-U+1D44D and italic lowercase U+1D44E-U+1D467, inside the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block. Mathematicians rely on this style for variables: the italic 𝑥 in an equation marks an unknown, while upright letters are kept for units and for function names such as sin.
The alphabet has a single hole. Position U+1D455, where a math italic small h would sit, was left unassigned because an italic h already existed as ℎ (U+210E), named PLANCK CONSTANT after the physics symbol. If an italic word ever shows an empty box or a blank where its h should be, that unassigned position is the cause; put ℎ in its place, which, like every other italic letter, normalizes back to a plain h.
Good uses for slanted text
Italics traditionally mark titles of books, films and albums, words borrowed from another language, and a voice that differs from the main text, such as a thought or a stage direction. In a plain-text caption those conventions still read clearly: 𝐷𝑢𝑛𝑒 in italics signals a title without needing quotation marks.
Italic is the quietest of the styles, so it suits a soft aside rather than a headline. It also mixes well with ordinary text in a bio, for instance a plain name followed by an italic tagline, because the slant reads as tone rather than volume.
Italic characters, search and screen readers
Because 𝑑𝑢𝑛𝑒 and dune are made of different code points, a plain-text search usually treats them as different words. Systems that apply Unicode compatibility normalization (NFKC) fold the italic letters back to ordinary ones, but you cannot count on every app doing so.
Screen readers vary. Some voice italic letters as normal words, others name each character, and some say nothing at all for symbols they do not recognize. The slant itself is never announced, so if the italics carry meaning, such as marking a title, that meaning is lost for listeners; plain quotation marks are the more accessible choice there.

| Capital A becomes | 𝐴 (U+1D434) |
| Small a becomes | 𝑎 (U+1D44E) |
| Digits 0-9 | Left unchanged |
| Punctuation | Left unchanged |
| Basic letters left as typed | None |
| UTF-16 units per letter | 2 (one supplementary-plane code point) |
Tips for italic text
- Use it for titles and asides; a whole paragraph of italics is tiring to read and harder to search.
- Type numbers exactly as you want them to appear, since they will not slant.
- Pasting bold output back in and picking italic leaves it bold: only basic A-Z letters are converted, so styles do not stack. Choose Bold Italic for both at once.
- Check the result on the device your audience uses; italic letters rely on fonts that include the math block.
Italic text FAQ
The Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block has digits only in bold, double-struck, sans-serif, sans-serif bold and monospace forms. There are no italic digits to switch to, so 0-9 stay upright while the letters around them slant.
ℎ (U+210E) is the italic small h. It lives in the Letterlike Symbols block under the name PLANCK CONSTANT, and Unicode deliberately left the matching slot in the math block, U+1D455, empty so the same letter would not be encoded twice.
Sometimes. Display names on many social apps accept any Unicode letters, but handles and usernames are often limited to plain letters, digits, underscores and periods. A field with that rule will reject or strip italic characters, so test it before committing.
No. Word processors apply italic formatting to ordinary letters, and that formatting is lost when you paste into a plain-text field. Unicode italic letters are different characters, so the slant travels with the text, but spell checkers and search tools may not recognize the words.
