Why use Word Counter?

Word Counter is a lightweight text analysis tool built around one input: a text area labeled "Your Text" where you type or paste your content. There is no upload step and no format to choose. As soon as characters exist in the box, six stat tiles report the numbers that matter for writing to a target: total words, total characters, characters with all whitespace stripped out, sentences, paragraphs, and an estimated reading time. Because the calculation is tied to the text field, the counts refresh with every keystroke rather than waiting for you to click a button. Each metric is derived by a simple, transparent rule. Words come from trimming the text and splitting it on whitespace, so consecutive spaces or newlines do not inflate the total. Sentences are separated at periods, question marks, and exclamation marks, and paragraphs are split wherever a blank line sits between two blocks of text. Reading time takes your word count, divides it by 200 words per minute, and rounds up, giving a quick sense of how long the passage takes to read. Two controls appear only once there is text to act on: "Clear" empties the box in one click, and "Copy Stats" places a compact summary of words, characters, and sentences onto your clipboard. Everything runs in the browser. The counting logic lives in the page itself and executes locally with React state, so nothing you type leaves your device and there is no server round trip for the core operation. That makes it suitable for drafting private notes, checking sensitive copy, or working offline. Frequently asked questions

How is a word counted?

The tool trims your text and splits it on any run of whitespace, so each block of non-space characters counts as one word. Empty or whitespace-only text returns zero words.

What is the difference between the two character counts?

"Characters" counts every character including spaces and line breaks, while "Chars (no space)" counts the text after all whitespace has been removed.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is your word count divided by 200 words per minute, rounded up to the next whole minute, and shown as a rough estimate like "~3 min".

How are sentences and paragraphs detected?

Sentences are counted by splitting on periods, question marks, and exclamation marks. Paragraphs are counted by splitting on blank lines between blocks of text, so pressing Enter twice starts a new paragraph.

Is my text uploaded or stored anywhere?

No. All counting happens in your browser as you type, and your text is never sent to a server. Closing or refreshing the page discards it.

What does the Copy Stats button copy?

It copies a single summary line to your clipboard in the form "Words: X | Characters: X | Sentences: X" using your current counts.
