How many pages is your word count?

Page counts assume 12pt Times New Roman with one-inch margins - roughly 500 words per single-spaced page and 250 double-spaced. Change the font, size, or spacing and the page count changes, which is exactly why assignments specify a word limit rather than a page limit.

WordsSingle-spacedDouble-spacedReading timeSpeaking time

What this Word Counter tool actually does

This is a free online word counter that tallies your text into six live figures the moment you type, paste, or upload it: words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and an estimated reading time. Whether you need a word count checker for an essay, a quick word count tool for a blog draft, or to count words in a file you already have saved, it works the same way — the numbers update as you go, with no button to press.

Unlike a text-only word counter, this one also reads PDF and Word (.docx) files directly, extracting the text in your browser so you don't have to copy and paste it out by hand first.

How to count words online

  1. 1

Type, paste, or upload your text

Type or paste directly into the text box, or upload a PDF, Word (.docx), or plain text (.txt) file and the tool extracts its text automatically.

  2. 2

    Read the live counts

Six stat tiles update instantly: words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and reading time.

  3. 3

    Copy or reset

Use Copy Stats to copy a summary line, or Clear to empty the box and start over.

Text you type stays in your browser, and an uploaded file is read locally too — nothing is sent to a server.

Counting words without installing anything

You do not need Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or any desktop software to count words. This free online word count tool runs entirely inside your browser tab: type, paste, or upload a file, and read the count. There is no signup, no trial period, and no limit on how many times you use it.

Counting words from a PDF, Word document, or plain text file

Click or drag a PDF (.pdf), Word (.docx), or plain text (.txt) file onto the upload area, and its text is extracted right in your browser and dropped into the text box for counting. A password-protected PDF cannot be read until the password is removed, and a scanned, image-only PDF has no extractable text layer at all, so the tool will tell you rather than return a false zero.

What each stat means

  • Words — every run of non-space characters, split on whitespace.
  • Characters — every character in the text, including spaces and line breaks.
  • Chars (no space) — the character count with all whitespace stripped out.
  • Sentences — counted at each period, question mark, or exclamation mark.
  • Paragraphs — counted wherever a blank line separates two blocks of text.
  • Reading time — word count divided by 200 words per minute, rounded up.

Character count (no space)The character total after all whitespace is removed
SentencesCounted by splitting the text on periods, question marks, and exclamation marks
ParagraphsCounted by splitting the text wherever a blank line separates two blocks
Reading timeWord count divided by 200 words per minute, rounded up to the next whole minute
Content lengthA general term for how long a piece of writing is, in words or characters
Document lengthThe overall size of an uploaded file once its text has been extracted

Counting on Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android

The tool runs in any modern browser, so counting words on Windows, counting words on Mac, counting words on iPhone, and counting words on Android all work the same way, without downloading any software. Type, paste, or upload, whether you are on a laptop or a phone.

Where word and character limits matter

Word and character counts are not academic — a submission that runs over a stated limit can be rejected outright before anyone reads it. A few common limits worth checking against:

  • Meta descriptions — around 155 characters before Google truncates.
  • Page titles — around 60 characters before truncation.
  • X posts — 280 characters on a standard account.
  • SMS — 160 characters per segment; longer messages are split and billed separately.
  • UCAS personal statement (UK) — 4,000 characters or 47 lines, whichever comes first.
  • Common App essay (USA) — 650 words maximum.
  • Canadian university applications — most set a word limit on supplementary essays rather than a page count, so check the specific program's stated figure rather than assuming a number.

Word counter for the USA, Canada, and UK

Word and character limits are set by the institution or platform, not by geography, but they come up constantly in a few recognizable places:

  • USA: a college essay word counter check against the Common App's 650-word cap, or a resume trimmed to fit a US job portal's field limit, both benefit from watching the live count while editing rather than pasting into a separate app afterward.
  • Canada: a university essay word counter check against a program's own supplementary essay limit works the same way — paste the draft in and edit down until it fits.
  • UK: a UCAS personal statement capped at 4,000 characters or 47 lines is one of the most exacting limits students hit, and checking both the character count and the line count matters, since either one can be the binding constraint.

How many words are in my text?

Paste any text to count its words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs instantly. Word count matters for essay limits, article briefs, and application forms. As a rough guide, 500 words is about one single-spaced page or two double-spaced pages in 12pt Times New Roman.

How many pages is 1,000 words?

1,000 words is about two pages single-spaced, or four pages double-spaced, in 12pt Times New Roman with one-inch margins. Page count varies with font, size, spacing, and margins, so a word count is a far more reliable measure than a page count for any assignment with a stated limit.
