These use real Unicode characters (not fonts), so they paste as styled text almost anywhere - Instagram bios, Discord, Twitter/X. Support varies slightly by app; test before relying on it somewhere important.

How do you underline text in a plain-text field?

Follow every character with U+0332, COMBINING LOW LINE, a mark that draws a line along the bottom of the character before it. Unicode defines it to connect on both sides, so u̲n̲d̲e̲r̲ reads as one underlined word. Spaces are left unmarked, so the line stops between words, and digits and punctuation are underlined too.

Underline example: a deadline

A deadline line converted with the underline style:

TypedDeadline: Friday, 5 June
UnderlineD̲e̲a̲d̲l̲i̲n̲e̲:̲ F̲r̲i̲d̲a̲y̲,̲ 5̲ J̲u̲n̲e̲

The colon, the comma and the 5 all receive the line, while the spaces between words do not. Depending on the font, the line under the y in Friday may also run through the letter's tail.

COMBINING LOW LINE versus other underline marks

U+0332 COMBINING LOW LINE sits in the Combining Diacritical Marks block, and Unicode's character notes describe it as connecting on the left and right, so a run of marked characters forms a continuous rule. Its neighbours behave differently: U+0331 COMBINING MACRON BELOW is a short bar under a single letter, and U+0333 COMBINING DOUBLE LOW LINE draws a double rule. The generator uses the single connecting line.

Like any combining mark, U+0332 has no width and attaches to the character before it. The generator adds one after every character except spaces, doubling the code-point count of each underlined word. Because the line is drawn per character at a fixed depth, it can cut through the descenders of g, j, p, q and y, whereas browsers usually skip their own underlines around descenders.

Underlines look like links

On the web an underline has long meant "this is a link", and accessibility guidance commonly advises against underlining text that is not one. In a bio or a comment, Unicode-underlined words can make readers tap and get nothing, so use the style sparingly and never on something that resembles a web address.

Where it does help: marking a title or a key term in a plain-text document, echoing the look of a handwritten note with one word underlined, or emphasizing a single word in a quote where bold would feel too heavy.

What gets lost for listeners and search

To assistive technology, u̲n̲d̲e̲r̲ is five letters interleaved with five marks. Some screen readers pass over the marks and read the word; others voice each mark as a symbol name, which turns a short underlined phrase into a long recitation. The underline carries no meaning to the software, so anything it signals, such as a required step or a key term, needs to be stated in words.

Unicode normalization does not remove the marks, so a search for the plain word may miss the underlined version. In fields with tight limits, remember that each underlined character costs two code points.

Underline tips

  • Underline one word or a short title, not whole sentences.
  • Avoid underlining anything that looks like a link, handle or email address.
  • Check how the line meets letters with descenders, such as g, p and y, in the font your readers will see.
