As of February 16, 2026, India moved from the 2×2 inch (51×51mm) format to 35×45mm, aligning with the ICAO Doc 9303 international standard already used by the UK and Schengen countries. The older 2×2 inch format is still used for OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card applications specifically.

What's the difference between the US and UK/Schengen/India formats?

The US format is square (2×2 inch, 600×600px). The UK/Schengen/India format is a taller rectangle (35×45mm, roughly a 0.78:1 width-to-height ratio) — the two aren't interchangeable, so pick the preset matching your destination country.
