The Cheapest Time to Move (and When to Book)
Moving prices are demand prices. The truck costs the mover the same in June as in November; what changes is how many other people want it that day. Three overlapping cycles decide the price, and you can play all three.
The yearly cycle: May through September is the expensive half
Roughly half of all moves happen in the summer window, driven by school calendars and lease cycles. Crews run at capacity, and prices rise with the demand. October through April is the discount season, with the deepest quiet in the dead of winter.
You cannot always choose the season, but even inside a summer move the other two cycles still work in your favor.
The monthly cycle: avoid the turn of the month
Leases start on the first, so the last weekend of one month and the first days of the next are the busiest slots on the calendar. Mid-month dates, roughly the 10th through the 20th, are consistently easier to book and cheaper to price.
The weekly cycle: Tuesday beats Saturday
Weekends carry a premium for the obvious reason that most people cannot take a Friday off. If you can, a Tuesday or Wednesday move gets a fresher crew, an easier elevator reservation, and often a lower rate for identical work.
When to actually book
Four to six weeks ahead is the practical sweet spot for a normal household move. Booking months out does not buy much discount, and booking days out costs plenty, because you are picking from whatever capacity is left. For a summer month-end weekend, stretch the lead time to eight weeks or more, because everyone else had your idea.
One warning about the opposite trap: a mover with wide-open availability during peak season at a suspiciously low price is a signal worth respecting. Cheap and instantly available in June is how deposit scams advertise.
What the calendar cannot fix
Distance and weight still set the base price. A cross-country move in February is cheaper than the same move in July, but it is never cheap. Get the base range for your route and home size from our moving cost calculator, check what your corridor looks like on our route cost pages, then use the calendar to shave the percentage the market allows.
The cheap corner, stated plainly
Mid-week, mid-month, between October and April, booked four to six weeks in advance. Every step you can take toward that corner is money kept.
