The Moving Costs Nobody Budgets For

Ask someone their moving budget and they quote the truck. But the truck is the one number you can actually estimate in advance; the budget dies from everything around it.

Before the truck arrives

Packing supplies are real money. Boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and mattress bags for a 2-bedroom home routinely reach a few hundred dollars bought new. Free boxes exist at grocery and liquor stores, but collect them two weeks early, because the week of the move you will pay retail out of desperation.

Deposits stack before refunds return. A new security deposit, first month's rent, and utility setup fees all leave your account weeks before the old deposit comes back. This is a cash-flow gap, not a cost, but it feels identical when the card declines.

On moving day

Access fees surprise people most. Stairs beyond the first flight, an elevator that must be reserved, or a truck that cannot park within a certain distance of the door can each add fees. If either address is awkward, say so when getting quotes, because discovering it on the day is the expensive version.

Tips and food are part of the bill. A crew that hauls your life up three flights expects lunch and a tip. Budget it; it is the cheapest goodwill you will ever buy.

After the truck leaves

The overlap period costs double. Most people pay rent or mortgage on two homes for some stretch. Even one week of overlap on both sides is real money that never appears in any moving quote.

The restock is the sneakiest line. The condiments, cleaning supplies, curtain rods, and shower curtains you threw away instead of moving all get repurchased in one brutal first grocery run. Plan on a few hundred dollars for a family household.

Immediate repairs at both ends. Patching nail holes to protect the old deposit, and the locksmith, lightbulbs, and small fixes the new place needs on day one.

Budget it honestly
