Why use Grade Calculator?

Grade weighting trips people up because it isn't intuitive that a 20%-weighted quiz average of 100% and an 80%-weighted exam average of 80% don't average to 90% — they average to 84% (0.2×100 + 0.8×80). This calculator handles the weighted-average arithmetic directly so a syllabus's stated breakdown (quizzes 20%, midterm 30%, final 30%, homework 20%, for example) translates correctly into an overall percentage. The "grade needed on the final" mode solves the same formula in reverse: given your current grade, how much of the total that current work represents, the final's weight, and your target grade, it isolates the one unknown — the final score — algebraically. When that required score comes out above 100%, the target simply isn't reachable with the remaining weight available, which the result states plainly rather than showing a misleadingly precise number.

How do I calculate my weighted grade?

Multiply each item's score by its weight, add those together, then divide by the total weight. Three items — 90% at 30%, 85% at 30%, 95% at 40% — give (90×30 + 85×30 + 95×40) ÷ 100 = 90.5%, an A-.

How do I find out what I need on my final?

Use the 'grade needed on the final' mode: enter your current grade, how much of your final grade that current work counts for, the final's weight, and your target grade. The calculator solves algebraically for the score you need on the final.

What if the score needed is over 100%?

That means your target isn't reachable even with a perfect score on the final, given the weights involved — the calculator flags this directly so you know to adjust your target or focus on other assignments.

What percentage is an A-?

On the standard scale used here, A- covers 90% to 92.99%. A is 93-96%, and A+ is 97% and above.
