Sign PDF

Add a drawn or typed signature to a PDF, right in your browser - no upload, no account, no daily signing limit like most free competitors impose.

Runs in your browser. Your files and text never leave your device - nothing is uploaded.

Click or drag a PDF file here

Processed entirely in your browser - your PDF is never uploaded. This stamps a visual signature image onto the page; it isn't a cryptographic digital signature, so it doesn't provide tamper-evidence or identity verification the way a certificate-based e-signature service does.

What this Sign PDF tool actually does

This is a free PDF signer that lets you sign a PDF document online by drawing or typing a signature and placing it on the page. Whether you need to sign a PDF, add an electronic signature to a form, or eSign a PDF before sending it back, it works the same way: create your signature, choose where it goes, and download the signed file.

It places a visual signature image on the page — a drawn mark or a typed name — rather than issuing a certificate-based digital signature. That distinction matters, and it is explained in full below.

How to sign a PDF

  1. 1

    Upload your PDF

Drop in the PDF that needs your signature. Its page count is read straight away so the page dropdown can list every page, and a locked file is flagged at this point.

  2. 2

    Create your signature

Draw it with your mouse or finger, or switch to typed mode and enter your name in one of three cursive-style fonts.

  3. 3

Choose the page, position, and width

Pick the last page or a specific page, one of six positions, and a width in points for the signature image.

  4. 4

    Sign and download

Click Sign & Download. The signature is stamped onto the page as an image, and the signed PDF downloads immediately.

Your signature is turned into a PNG on a canvas in this tab, and pdf-lib embeds that PNG on the page you picked. Neither the PDF nor the signature image is sent to a server along the way.

How to sign a PDF without printing, without Adobe, and without other software

You do not need to print, sign, and re-scan a document, and you do not need Adobe Acrobat or any desktop software. This free PDF signing tool runs entirely inside your browser tab: upload your file, draw or type your signature, download the result. There is no signup, no trial period, and no daily limit on how many documents you sign online.

Electronic signature vs. digital signature, honestly

These two terms get used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing, and it is worth being precise about which one this tool provides. An electronic signature is any electronic mark showing intent to sign — a drawn image or a typed name placed on a page, which is exactly what this tool creates. A digital signature is a specific, stronger technology: it uses a certificate to cryptographically seal the document, providing tamper-evidence and verified identity that a picture of a signature cannot offer on its own.

For everyday paperwork — internal forms, personal letters, informal agreements, and documents where a visual signature is all that is expected — this tool is the right fit. For contracts, deeds, or other legally significant documents that specifically require a verifiable audit trail, use a certificate-based e-signature service designed for that purpose.

Drawn or typed — two ways to create a signature

  • Drawing mode uses your mouse on a laptop or your finger on a touchscreen, so it works the same on a phone as on a desktop.
  • Typed mode renders your name in one of three cursive-style fonts, useful when a mouse-drawn signature does not look right.
  • There is no option to upload a scanned or photographed signature image — only drawing and typing are supported.

If you want a signature image to reuse in emails or other apps, the Signature Generator creates one as a separate PNG you can keep.

Sign PDF terms explained

Electronic, digital and handwritten signatures are easy to confuse, and the difference decides whether a visual stamp from this page is enough for your document. Each term below is defined the way this tool uses it.

TermWhat it means here
Electronic signatureA signature applied electronically to a document — the broad category this tool produces
Digital signatureA certificate-based, cryptographically verified signature with an audit trail — a different, stronger guarantee this tool does not provide
Handwritten signatureA signature drawn by hand; this tool lets you draw one with a mouse or finger
Signature imageThe PNG picture of your signature that gets stamped onto the PDF page
Signed documentThe PDF that downloads after your signature image is placed on the chosen page
Document signingThe general process of adding a signature to a document before it is shared or filed
eSignShorthand for signing a document electronically, which is what this tool does
Signature fieldThe area on the page where a signature is expected; this tool lets you position the image there manually
PDF documentThe file being signed; it is read, stamped, and re-saved entirely in your browser

Signing on Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android

A phone or tablet is often the better place to sign, because drawing with a finger on an iPhone or Android screen gives a more natural stroke than dragging a mouse. On Windows or a Mac with no touchscreen, typed mode with one of the cursive fonts usually looks neater than a mouse-drawn line. Either way the signed copy is saved with -signed added to its filename.

Is it free, and is my file safe?

Signing on The Tools Kit is free, with no daily signing limit unlike most hosted PDF signers.

Because signing happens on your own device, your PDF is never uploaded to a server. That matters when you are signing private documents, such as contracts, leases, or personal forms.

Common uses

  • Signing a form or letter before emailing it back
  • Adding your signature to a personal document without creating an account
  • Signing several documents in one sitting without hitting a free-tier daily cap
  • Adding a signature to a template or agreement before sharing it for countersigning
  • Signing a document on a phone while away from a printer or scanner
  • Initialling more than one page by running the downloaded copy through the tool again for each extra page

Signing PDF documents for the USA, Canada, and UK

Everyday paperwork that just needs a signature mark, rather than a certified e-signature, comes up in a few common places:

  • USA: signing a US lease renewal, a school permission form, or an internal HR document is a typical case for sign PDF USA users reach for, where a visual signature is all that is expected.
  • Canada: a Canadian rental agreement, a volunteer waiver, or an internal approval form is often signed the same way, without needing a certified e-signature service.
  • UK: a UK tenancy agreement, a school consent form, or an internal memo signed for UK documents commonly only needs a visual signature, not a certificate-based one.

For anything with real legal weight — a property sale, a will, a court filing — check what your jurisdiction and counterparty require, since some documents specifically call for a certified digital signature rather than a visual one.

Frequently asked questions

Need to watermark or number the same document? Use our Add Watermark to PDF tool or our Add Page Numbers to PDF tool. If the form arrived as a Word file, turn it into a PDF with Word to PDF before signing. When the signature page is a separate file, attach it to the rest of the agreement with Merge PDF, and if a portal rejects the signed copy for size, Compress PDF trims it down. How do you sign a PDF online without uploading it?

To sign a PDF, open the file in your browser, draw a signature with a mouse or finger or type a name in a cursive font, then choose the page, one of six positions, and a width in points (160 by default). The signature is stamped as a PNG image and the signed PDF downloads directly.

Is a drawn signature on a PDF legally the same as a digital signature?

No. A drawn or typed signature is a visual image placed on the page. It shows intent to sign but offers no tamper-evidence or identity verification, unlike a certificate-based digital signature that cryptographically seals the document. For contracts that require verified e-signatures, use a certificate-based signing service instead.
