What this Add Watermark to PDF tool actually does

This is a free PDF watermark tool, also called a PDF watermark generator, that stamps a text watermark across every page of a PDF. Whether you need to add a watermark to a PDF, mark a document CONFIDENTIAL or DRAFT, or run a batch of pages through the same PDF watermark online in one sitting, it works the same way: type the text, set the opacity and size, and every page gets stamped in one pass.

It adds a text watermark, not an image or logo watermark — the mark is always a typed phrase, rendered in a bold font, rotated diagonally, and centered on the page.

How to add a watermark to a PDF

  1. 1

    Upload your PDF

Drop in the PDF you are about to share. Use a finished copy, because the mark is stamped on every page and cannot be lifted off later inside this tool.

  2. 2

    Type your watermark text

Enter the phrase you want stamped across every page, such as "CONFIDENTIAL" or "DRAFT". It defaults to CONFIDENTIAL if you leave it as is.

  3. 3

    Adjust opacity and font size

Drag the opacity slider from 5% to 80% and the font size slider from 20px to 100px until the mark looks right against your content.

  4. 4

    Add the watermark and download

Click Add Watermark. The text is stamped diagonally across every page, and the watermarked PDF downloads immediately.

pdf-lib embeds Helvetica Bold and draws your phrase, in gray at 45 degrees, onto each page inside this browser tab. The document you are labelling CONFIDENTIAL is therefore never copied to a server to get that label.

How to add a watermark to a PDF without Adobe Acrobat or extra software

You do not need Adobe Acrobat, or any desktop software at all, to add a watermark to a PDF. This free PDF watermark tool runs entirely inside your browser tab: upload your file, type your text, download the result. There is no signup, no trial period, and no limit on how many PDF pages you watermark for free.

Text watermarks only — no image or logo watermark

Worth saying plainly: this tool adds a text watermark to PDF pages, not an image watermark or a logo watermark. There is no upload field for a picture, and the watermark is always built from the phrase you type into the text box. That covers the most common cases — CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, a copyright line, an internal reference code — but if what you actually need stamped onto a page is a company logo or a graphic, this is not the tool for that step. For a photo or screenshot rather than a PDF, the Add Text to Image tool places a caption or credit on a JPG or PNG.

Confidential, draft, and copyright watermarks

The text field defaults to CONFIDENTIAL, but it accepts any phrase, so the same tool covers the common watermark wording people look for:

  • Type CONFIDENTIAL to add a confidential watermark before sharing sensitive pages externally
  • Type DRAFT to add a draft watermark to a document that is not yet final
  • Type a copyright line, such as a name and year, to add a copyright watermark to shared work
  • Type a sample or preview label for documents sent to prospective clients

Whatever the wording, it is stamped diagonally across every page with the same opacity and size controls.

Add Watermark to PDF terms explained

Watermark searches mix text marks, logo marks, opacity and position as if they were one feature. This table separates what the slider and text box on this page control from what they do not.

TermWhat it means here
WatermarkText stamped across a page to mark, label, or protect a document
Text watermarkA watermark made of typed characters — the only type this tool creates
Image watermark / logo watermarkA watermark made from a picture or company logo instead of text — not supported here
Opacity / transparencyHow see-through the watermark is; lower numbers let more of the page show through
Watermark positionWhere the watermark sits on the page; this tool always centers it diagonally, with no corner or edge option
Confidential watermarkA text watermark reading CONFIDENTIAL, marking a document as restricted
Draft watermarkA text watermark reading DRAFT, marking a document as not yet final
Copyright watermarkA text watermark carrying a copyright notice or attribution line
PDF pagesEvery page in the document; the watermark is applied to all of them in a single pass

Watermarking on Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android

The two sliders are easier to fine-tune with a mouse on Windows or a Mac, where you can open the result beside the original and judge whether 20% opacity is enough. On an iPhone or Android phone, drag the sliders with a fingertip, save the copy, and open it from Files or Downloads to check that the mark does not hide small print before you send it.

Is it free, and is my file safe?

Watermarking on The Tools Kit is free, and the only mark that ends up on your pages is the one you typed.

Because the watermark is drawn on your own device, your PDF is never uploaded to a server. That matters when you are marking private or confidential documents, such as contracts, proposals, or internal reports.

Common uses

  • Marking a document CONFIDENTIAL before sharing it outside a team
  • Stamping DRAFT across a report or proposal that is still being reviewed
  • Adding a copyright line across pages shared publicly, such as sample chapters or portfolios
  • Labeling a preview or sample PDF sent to a prospective client before the final version
  • Marking internal review copies so they are not mistaken for a released document
  • Stamping DRAFT on a contract that was written in Word and exported with Word to PDF

Watermarking PDF documents for the USA, Canada, and UK

Marking a document before it goes out matters most when the same file passes through several hands. That comes up in a few common places:

  • USA: a draft contract sent to a US client, a confidential term sheet shared with a US investor, or a sample chapter attached to a US book proposal are all cases where a DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL watermark PDF USA users add before sending the file onward.
  • Canada: a watermark PDF Canada teams use often marks a draft agreement circulated to a Canadian client, or a confidential submission for a Canadian grant or funding application, before it is finalized.
  • UK: a UK tenancy draft, a confidential brief sent to a UK institution, or coursework submitted with a watermark PDF UK universities ask for as a plagiarism-review copy are typical everyday cases.

Frequently asked questions

Need to number the pages too, or add a signature? Use our Add Page Numbers to PDF tool or our Sign PDF tool. To shrink the file before sending it, try Compress PDF. Because every page is stamped, the way to mark only part of a document is to separate those pages with Split PDF, watermark that part, and rejoin everything with Merge PDF. The mark is drawn as a text layer, so if you want it baked into the page image, render the pages with PDF to JPG and rebuild the file with JPG to PDF, accepting that the text will no longer be selectable. How do you add a text watermark to a PDF?

To watermark a PDF, upload the file, type the watermark text, set opacity between 5% and 80%, choose a font size from 20 to 100 points, and click Add Watermark. The text is stamped diagonally at 45 degrees across the centre of every page in grey Helvetica Bold. Everything runs in the browser, so the PDF is never uploaded.

What opacity should a PDF watermark be?

For a watermark such as CONFIDENTIAL or DRAFT, 20% to 30% opacity is the usual choice: visible on every page, but light enough that the underlying text stays readable and prints cleanly. Use 50% or more only when the watermark must dominate, for example on sample documents that should not be reused.
