Plan Your Wedding Budget Breakdown
The Tools Kit’s free Wedding Cost Calculator turns one number into a full spending plan. Type in your total wedding budget. The tool then shares the money out across ten parts:
- Venue and catering
- Photography and video
- Attire and beauty
- Flowers and decor
- Music and entertainment
- Rings
- Stationery
- Favors and gifts
- Transportation
- A 10% buffer for surprises
Amounts show in US dollars, British pounds, or Canadian dollars. No figure yet? The tool starts from a round planning budget for each country. That is $30,000 in the US, £20,000 in the UK, and C$30,000 in Canada. These are round planning numbers we chose, not survey averages. They are not a target. Swap them for what you can really afford.
How to Use the Wedding Cost Calculator
- 1
Choose your country
Select the US, the UK, or Canada. The money sign changes to $, £, or C$. If you have not touched the total yet, the box also fills in a round planning budget for that country.
- 2
Enter your total wedding budget
Type the full amount you plan to spend on the wedding. Plain digits like 25000 work, and so do 25,000 or $25,000.
- 3
Review the category breakdown
The table shares your total out across ten lines. Venue and catering comes first. Then come photos, attire, flowers, music, rings, and smaller items. A 10% buffer closes the list. Each line shows its share and its amount.
- 4
Compare scenarios
Try as many totals as you like. The table updates as you type. That lets you set a small wedding next to a big one before you call any vendors.
Your numbers stay on your device. There is no account to make, and nothing is sent anywhere.
Wedding Budget Breakdown by Category
Each line is the total times its share. The shares add up to 100%. Here is the $30,000 US budget, line by line:
| Category | Share | On $30,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Venue & Catering | 45% | $13,500 |
| Photography & Video | 10% | $3,000 |
| Attire & Beauty | 10% | $3,000 |
| Flowers & Decor | 8% | $2,400 |
| Music & Entertainment | 8% | $2,400 |
| Rings | 3% | $900 |
| Stationery | 2% | $600 |
| Favors & Gifts | 2% | $600 |
| Transportation | 2% | $600 |
| Miscellaneous / Buffer | 10% | $3,000 |
Venue and catering is the biggest line. It pays for the room, the food, the drinks, and the staff. All of that grows with every guest you add. Got a quote from a vendor? The percentage calculator shows what share of your total it takes. If a package comes with money off, the discount calculator shows what you really save.
How Much Does a Wedding Cost? Worked Examples
- UK budget of £20,000: venue and catering £9,000. Photography £2,000 and attire £2,000. Flowers £1,600 and entertainment £1,600. Rings £600. Stationery, favours, and transport £400 each. Buffer £2,000.
- Small US wedding of $15,000: venue and catering $6,750. Photography $1,500 and attire $1,500. Flowers $1,200 and entertainment $1,200. Rings $450. Stationery, favors, and transport $300 each. Buffer $1,500.
- Cost per guest: on $30,000, venue and catering gets $13,500. Spread over 100 guests, that is $135 a head. Divide by your own guest count to check caterer quotes. The calculator does not ask how many guests you have.
Vendor tips usually come out of the 10% buffer. The tip calculator shows what a tip on a caterer or band bill comes to.
Saving For and Paying For a Wedding
Once you know the total, you need a way to pay for it. The days calculator counts the days until the wedding. That tells you how much to save each month.
Borrowing makes a wedding cost more than the plan shows, because interest on a card balance or a personal loan comes on top of the total. Planning a honeymoon too? The vacation budget calculator splits a trip budget in the same way.

- Checking if a venue, photographer, or florist quote fits a normal share of the total

Frequently Asked Questions
The calculator starts from round planning figures of $30,000 in the US, £20,000 in the UK, and C$30,000 in Canada. These are numbers we chose, not survey averages, and published wedding surveys report their own figures. Real costs swing a lot with guest count, region, season, and venue. Use them as a guide, not a goal.
The calculator uses a fixed rule of thumb. Venue and catering get 45%. Photography and video get 10%, and so do attire and beauty. Flowers and decor get 8%, as do music and entertainment. Rings take 3%. Stationery, favors, and transport take 2% each. The last 10% is a buffer. Each line is your total times its share.
Venue and catering take 45%. That is the biggest line by far. On $30,000 it comes to $13,500. On a $15,000 wedding it is $6,750.
Photography and video get 10% of the total. That means $3,000 on a $30,000 budget. On a £20,000 UK budget it means £2,000.
There is no guest-count box, but you can do it by hand. Take a category and divide it by your guest count. On $30,000, venue and catering is $13,500. For 100 guests, that is $135 each. If quotes come in far higher, a shorter guest list is the biggest saving.
Weddings nearly always cost more than planned. Overtime fees, extra rentals, tips, and last-minute buys add up. The 10% buffer soaks up those costs, so no other line gets squeezed. On $30,000 it holds back $3,000.
No. The shares stay fixed, so every couple starts from the same plan. You can still change the total. All ten amounts update right away.
No. The tool never converts currency. Picking a new country changes the sign in front of the numbers. It also swaps in that country’s planning budget, but only if the box still holds the old prefilled figure. A total you typed yourself keeps the same number.
Yes. The box reads 25,000, $25,000 and £25,000 as the full amount. So a $25,000 budget puts $11,250 on venue and catering. A decimal point is fine too. A negative total is not accepted; the box shows an error message instead.
It is free, and you do not need an account. The math happens on your own device. Your budget is never sent to a server or saved.

How do you split a wedding budget?
A typical wedding budget splits into venue and catering 45%, photography and video 10%, attire and beauty 10%, flowers and decor 8%, music and entertainment 8%, rings 3%, stationery 2%, favours 2%, transport 2%, and a 10% buffer. On a $30,000 budget, that puts $13,500 toward the venue and food and $3,000 in reserve.
What is the biggest wedding expense?
Venue and catering is by far the biggest wedding expense, typically absorbing about 45% of the total budget because it covers the space, food, drinks, and staff for every guest. Guest count drives it directly, so trimming the list is the single most effective way to cut costs; photography and attire come a distant second.
