What this Rotate PDF tool actually does
This is a free PDF rotator that turns every page of a PDF document by 90, 180, or 270 degrees. Whether you need to rotate PDF pages that came out of a scanner sideways, fix a PDF file exported in the wrong orientation, or just turn a whole document upright, it works the same way: pick an angle, and that page rotation is applied to every page at once.
It changes the page rotation attribute rather than redrawing the content, so this online PDF rotator keeps every page's original resolution and layout exactly as it was, just facing the right way.
How to rotate a PDF
- 1
Upload your PDF
Drop the sideways or upside-down PDF onto the upload area, or click it to browse. Only one file is rotated per run, and the copy you picked stays as it was.
- 2
Choose a rotation angle
Pick 90°, 180°, or 270°. That angle is added to every page in the document.
- 3
Rotate the PDF
Every page turns by the angle you chose, in a single pass.
- 4
Download your rotated PDF
Save the corrected file, with "-rotated" added to the filename automatically.
The pages are turned by pdf-lib inside this browser tab, so the PDF you pick is read from your disk and the rotated copy is written straight back to your downloads. No copy of the document leaves your computer.
How to rotate a PDF without Adobe Acrobat or extra software
You do not need Adobe Acrobat, or any desktop software at all, to rotate PDF files. This free PDF rotator runs entirely inside your browser tab: choose your file, pick an angle, download the result. There is no signup, no trial period, and no limit on how many times you rotate PDF pages online.
Because the rotation happens on your device rather than a server, it also works as a private way to fix a sideways PDF when the document is not something you want to upload anywhere.
Rotating a single page: what this tool can and cannot do
Being upfront about a limit: this tool rotates the entire PDF document by one angle. It does not offer a per-page control, so you cannot rotate one page while leaving the rest untouched here. That covers the common case, a whole scan saved sideways, but not a document where only page 4 out of 20 needs turning.
For that case, split the odd page out into its own file with our Split PDF tool, rotate that single-page file here, then rejoin it with the rest of the document using our Merge PDF tool. All three steps run in the browser, so the page keeps its original quality throughout, and the whole workaround usually takes under a minute.
Choosing 90°, 180°, or 270°
- 90° turns every page a quarter turn clockwise, the usual fix for a portrait PDF that opens on its side.
- 180° turns pages fully upside down, for a PDF scanned in completely reversed.
- 270° turns pages a quarter turn counterclockwise, equivalent to rotating 90° the other way.
If a page already carries some rotation, for example from a landscape PDF scanned at an angle, the angle you choose is added to that existing rotation and wrapped at 360°, so repeat rotations combine correctly rather than cancelling out unpredictably.
Does rotating reduce quality?
No. Rotating a PDF changes the page's orientation attribute, not the content itself, so it is lossless. Text stays selectable, images keep their original resolution, and nothing is re-rendered or recompressed, whether you rotate PDF pages once or several times in a row.
Rotate PDF terms explained
Rotation, orientation and direction sound like the same thing, but they describe different parts of a sideways page. This table pins down how each word is used on the Rotate PDF page.
| Term | What it means here |
|---|---|
| PDF pages | The individual pages inside your document, all rotated together by this tool |
| Page rotation | The angle a page is turned by, stored as part of the page itself, not a re-drawn image |
| Page orientation | Whether a page displays upright, sideways, or upside down |
| Portrait PDF | A page that is taller than it is wide, the usual orientation for documents and letters |
| Landscape PDF | A page that is wider than it is tall, common for scans, spreadsheets, and slides |
| Clockwise rotation | Turning a page to the right; 90° and 180° both move a page clockwise |
| Counterclockwise rotation | Turning a page to the left; equivalent to rotating 270° clockwise |
| Page direction | Which way the top of the page faces after rotation |
Rotating on Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android
Rotating a PDF on Windows, on a Mac, on an iPhone or on an Android phone uses the same three buttons: pick the file, tap 90°, 180° or 270°, then save the copy. A phone is handy for a scan you just made with its camera, while a laptop makes it easier to check the result side by side with the original. If the sideways item is a photo rather than a PDF, the Image Rotator turns JPG and PNG files instead.
Is it free, and is my file safe?
Rotating costs nothing on The Tools Kit. You can turn as many documents as you like, and the rotated file carries no stamp or added page.
Because the rotation happens on your own device, your PDF is never uploaded to a server. A scanned passport page or signed lease can be straightened without handing it to a third-party site first.
Common uses
- Fixing a document that was scanned sideways, page after page
- Correcting a PDF exported from a phone camera or scanning app in the wrong orientation
- Turning a landscape PDF report upright before printing it as portrait pages
- Straightening a whole batch of pages before merging them into a larger file
- Turning a landscape slide deck upright before saving each page with PDF to JPG
- Preparing a rotated PDF document so it displays correctly in a viewer or on a projector
Rotating PDF documents for the USA, Canada, and UK
A page facing the wrong way is a common reason a document gets bounced back by a portal that expects everything upright. That comes up in a few common places:
- USA: a scanned US visa document, a US job application attachment, or US government paperwork submitted sideways is often rejected on sight, and rotating it before upload avoids the back-and-forth.
- Canada: Canadian immigration paperwork, a Canada visa application, or Canadian government forms scanned from a phone frequently need straightening before a portal will accept them.
- UK: a UK visa application, HMRC paperwork, or a UK job application attachment scanned at an angle is easiest to fix by rotating the whole file rather than rescanning it.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. It is a free PDF rotator with no signup, no watermark, and no daily limit, so you can use it as an online PDF rotator as often as you need.
Upload your PDF, pick 90°, 180°, or 270°, and click Rotate PDF. Every page in the document turns by that angle, and the result downloads automatically.
Upload the file, select the 90° option, and click Rotate PDF. Every page in the document rotates a quarter turn clockwise.
Choose the 180° option before rotating. That turns every page upside down, which is the fix for a document scanned in fully reversed.
Choose 270°, which is the same as a quarter turn counterclockwise. It is the usual fix when 90° turned pages the wrong way.
Not directly. This tool applies one rotation angle to every page in the document, so a single sideways page needs a short workaround: split that page out into its own file with our Split PDF tool, rotate it on its own here, then merge it back into the rest of the document with our Merge PDF tool.
The tool always rotates every page in the document by the same angle, so rotating multiple PDF pages, or all of them, is the default behavior. There is no way to select a subset of pages to rotate.
Yes, that is exactly what it does. Choose an angle once and it is applied to every page in a single pass, whether the document has two pages or two hundred.
The rotation is saved into the downloaded file, so it opens correctly rotated in any PDF viewer from then on. Your original upload is left untouched; only the new, downloaded copy carries the rotation.
Yes. There is nothing to install and no account to create. Everything runs online in your browser, so you can rotate a PDF without Adobe Acrobat, a desktop PDF editor, or any other software.
Yes. A sideways PDF is usually one page rotation away from upright. Try 90° first; if that turns it further the wrong way, use 270° instead, or 180° if the page is fully upside down.
Open the file here, choose whichever of 90°, 180°, or 270° matches how far off the pages currently are, and download the result. If you are not sure which angle is correct, try one and check the preview in your PDF viewer before relying on the download.
Yes. A rotate PDF scanned document works the same as any other file, since the tool changes the page rotation attribute rather than reading or re-rendering the scanned content.
The angle you choose is added to whatever rotation the page already has, then wrapped at 360°, so rotations combine correctly instead of overwriting each other.
No. Rotation changes a page attribute, not the page content, so text and images keep their original resolution and formatting exactly.
Not while it is locked. A password-protected PDF cannot be opened by the tool, so remove the password first by opening it and saving an unprotected copy, then rotate that copy.
No. The rotation runs entirely in your browser, so your PDF stays on your device and is never sent to a server.
Yes. The rotation is done by a small script that loads into the page, so a phone browser on iPhone or Android turns the pages the same way a desktop browser on Windows, Mac or Linux does. The rotated copy lands in your normal downloads folder.
Need to work on specific pages instead? Use our Split PDF tool to pull pages out, Organize PDF to reorder or remove them, or Delete PDF Pages to drop pages you no longer need. When you are done, Merge PDF puts everything back into one file. If a rotated scan still shows dark scanner edges, Crop PDF trims them, and Compress PDF shrinks a heavy scan before you email it. Every other page tool is listed on the PDF tools hub.

How do you rotate a PDF and save it?
To rotate a PDF, upload the file, pick 90°, 180° or 270°, and click Rotate PDF. The chosen angle is added to every page’s existing rotation and the result downloads as a new file with -rotated appended to the name. Rotation is applied as a page attribute in the browser, so the content is not re-rendered or recompressed.
Can you rotate just one page of a PDF?
A whole-document rotate turns every page by the same angle. To fix a single sideways page, split that page out into its own PDF, rotate it on its own, then merge it back into place with a PDF merger. Every step runs in the browser, and the pages keep their original quality throughout.
